Many of the companies I work with are struggling with this issue. Some use their "Personal Responsiblity" policies (covering everything from use of company money and equipment to authorizing designated media contacts) to try to control content and use of company time. However, in a 24 x 7 world, where 40 hour weeks now stretch into 65 hour weeks, the concept of "company time" is becoming meaningless.
Content is a different issue and is possible to control. If the blog, Tweet or Facebook entry deals with the employee's company, leadership, financial activities or policies - that could be covered by the companies rules regarding who speaks for the company publicly. IF they have a policy.

This is so true. Some of the local Pittsburgh meteorologists have been very responsive on Twitter, which is helpful for up-to-date reports. I like the real-time pictures too!
